Cardioband System
Cardioband System
A procedure for the treatment of mitral insufficiency
Mitral insufficiency is a disorder of the heart that occurs when the mitral valve does not close properly during the contraction of the left ventricle. As a consequence blood is also pushed from the left ventricle into the left atria.
The treatment of choice for mitral insufficiency is often mitral valve surgery. Today it is possible to use a new procedure called Cardioband.
This procedure can be done in a beating heart and thus prevents the use of a surgical cut in the chest of the patient. Instead a venous trans femoral access is used to reach the valve, this represents a big advantage for those patients who have to be treated with this procedure.
The mitral valve is now reached through skin under ECG monitoring.
This procedure consists of positioning a sort of ring around the valve. The ring is connected to the valve through a series of screw-in anchors.
Once the ring has been anchored, it is possible to reduce the dimension of the valve by constricting the band. Reducing the opening improves the opening/closing of the valve. The operator arranges the device of the type here represented:
The device is positioned by the operator through the use of this system:
